Revit user interface fonts are appearing as squares instead of the expected font.

Revit user interface font displays as square symbols

Issue

In Revit you notice the user interface fonts are appearing as squares instead of the expected font.

Solution

The Revit user interface uses the font defined in the Windows Control Panel.  By default it is set to Tahoma size 8.  If there were any changes to the font, size or Windows appearance style the interface may have difficulties displaying the font.

  1. Reset the font to Tahoma size 8:

For Windows XP this is located under the Windows Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Advanced > Font.

For Windows Vista this is located under the Windows Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Change the color scheme > Advanced > Font.

Set the following items to Tahoma, size 8:
Active Title Bar, Icon, Inactive Title Bar, Menu, Message Box, Palette Title, Selected Items and Tooltip.

If the issue persists after Revit is closed and reopened move onto the next step:

  2. Disable smooth edges for screen fonts:

For Windows XP this is located under the Windows Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Effects > un-check Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts.

For Windows Vista this is located under the Windows Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Change the color scheme > Effects > un-check Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts.

If the issue persists after Revit is closed and reopened move onto the next step:
  3. Clean uninstall \ reinstall of Revit
